Throwback Thursdays Return
Since last year’s “Throwback Thursdays” at Kenda Drive-In was such a success, we are doing it again for 2017! Last Thursday night was our first movie event of the season and we opened with Burt Reynolds in “The Cannonball Run”. Although the weather went from warm on Wednesday to super cold on Thursday, we still had a really good turnout. We saw a lot of the same faces from last year’s event plus a lot of new car owners. Word of mouth seems to be spreading as we had a couple in an old Chevy that drove five hours just to come to our event AND they are planning on attending at least one more “Throwback” this year!
In 2016 we played “Two Lane Blacktop”, “Vanishing Point”, “Death Proof”, “Clutch” and ended with “Smokey and the Bandit”. This month we will see the original “Gone in 60 Seconds”, watch Peter Fonda in “Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry”, move on to another Burt Reynolds movie “Hooper” and end with the classic “Bullitt” starring Steve McQueen.
Only pre-1980 vehicles are allowed through the gate and admittance to the movie is free. Goody bags and punch cards were given out to all car owners in March but then will only be given to all “first-timers” who have not attended one of the movie nights before. Door prizes will be given out as my husband and I walk around and meet with the car owners. The car owners will want to make sure to get their card punched as the more movie nights they attend, the greater chance they have at winning the grand prizes at the finale in July.
Last year Gold Eagle Co., makers of STA-BIL, 104+ and 303 automotive products, donated over $2,000 worth of products to the 20 grand prize winners who had attended the most movie nights. As a Gold Eagle representative/Cool Rides Online Champ, I have been able to secure Gold Eagle as the main sponsor of this year’s event.
In addition to the amount of products that they have donated, Gold Eagle has produced flyers with all of the movies and dates on them so that the owners won’t forget what is playing each month. These are included in the goody bags. Other companies that have donated items for this year’s event include: Muscle Car Review Magazine, Throttle Gals Magazine, Eckler’s, Lucas Oil, Summit Racing, JEGS, Edelbrock, Just Get Dirty Garage, RockAuto, Classic Performance, Hagerty Insurance, Painless, Hemmings Motors, Stoner, Magnaflow, Eaton Detroit Spring, Hurst, B&M Racing, Flowmaster and Surf City.
Since the weather in Arkansas can change in an instant, car owners can stay updated in case of movie cancellations on Kenda’s website- https://www.kendadrivein.com/ and on their Facebook page which is always kept current. In addition to getting last year’s “Throwback Thursdays” event featured in Renegade Magazine and Chevy Classics Magazine, Street Muscle Magazine has already ran a feature on this year’s “Throwback Thursdays”- Cruise Night And A Drive-In Movie: Not A Thing Of The Past and will continue to do so each Monday before the event with information AND a movie review on their website.
This is NOT marketed as a car show but is intended to be a gathering of like-minded individuals. I am grateful to be working with such awesome people as Kenda and Todd Dearing, owners of the Kenda Drive-In, as they make it possible for vintage car owners to get together, win some car products AND watch a car movie! Searcy County is very blessed to have the fine folks who run the Drive-In and allow these events to go on. I am also very honored to be a CRO Champ and be able to work with a company that produces such high quality automotive products and who supports these types of grassroots events! Gold Eagle is an awesome company to represent and I use their products in all of my muscle cars and in my vintage Harleys.
