Looking for a job?: SEMA has top auto industry positions listed

As a lifetime car lover, you may have thought about quitting your day job, driving off in your classic Mustang and pursuing your dream job in the automotive industry. However, before you fill up the tank and pack your belongings into those snug rear seats, you may want to research the kind of positions that are often available.

For example, while some TV hosts get to take home comfortable salaries simply for talking about cars, your chance of obtaining this kind of stardom may be smaller than you'd think, even after bemoaning your lack of trunk space.

Most of the positions in the automotive industry are available for those looking to specialize in automotive body and glass repairs, which can earn you a yearly salary of around $37,000 a year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Automotive mechanics earn a bit less – around $35,000 annually, but those who own a thriving shop are likely to do much better.

The top positions in the industry, according to federal research, are available to those with engineering experience, as these professionals generally take home more than twice what mechanics and auto body specialists earn. However, these require formal degrees, years of training and a knack for artistic design.

Still, those who don't want to give up on their dream can turn to SEMA's Member Classifieds. As April 26, the organization listed sales openings at local dealerships in California and Texas and a service advisor spot open in Maryland. However, these were just a few of the more than 50 jobs currently taking applications around the country.
