Can You Really Cook Food on a Car’s Engine?

Engine CookingEven though most people prefer a home oven, it is possible to create a safe and tasty meal on a car’s engine. This may not be efficient or economical, but after a long car trip, a person will be able to sit down to some good food. It is essential to follow some rules in order to avoid damage to the car. Here are some tips to create a tasty meal under the hood of a car.

Prepare the Food for Engine Cooking

Uncooked food should be completely wrapped in aluminum foil. There should be no holes or gaps left open, unless steam must escape. The food should be covered in two or three layers of foil. It should then be placed on the hottest part of the engine. The metal parts get the warmest, especially the exhaust manifold.

Cooking on the Engine

The hardest part that comes with cooking on an engine is making sure that the food stays in place while the car is in motion. A person can tie the package to the engine or place it in a snug location. Most people use lightweight wire to secure the food to an area of the engine that does not move. When everything seems in place, it is time to hit the road.

Good Car Recipes

There are entire books dedicated to food that can be cooked on a car’s engine. Learning some of these recipes will be a fun way to eat on the road.

Lemon Garlic Salmon with Green Beans and Spinach

A person puts a few green beans and spinach around a 1/2 pound piece of salmon. The fish should be rubbed with butter and flavored with some garlic and pepper. A small amount of lemon juice is added as well. This is all wrapped in foil and placed on the intake manifold. After driving for 20 minutes, the meal is done.

Molasses Cookies

Dessert can be prepared on a car’s engine as well. To begin, one stick of butter is mixed with 1 cup of white sugar, one egg, and 1/2 cup of molasses. In a separate bowl, a person mixes 2 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of ground ginger. All ingredients are mixed and chilled. When ready, the dough is rolled, cut into different shapes and placed on the cookie sheet. The pan is placed on an engine that has been running with the air conditioning on. Unlike other recipes, the car stays in place with the hood up. In eight minutes, the cookies will be ready.
